Linux on the U100 (2)
Posted by Bob on Apr 15, 2008
Well, as I wrote in my earlier post, the first attempt to install Linux my U100 wasn’t a big succes. But, after some Googling, I learned that Xubuntu should run witj the Lilo bootloader instead of GRUPP.
So, after a quick download of the Xubuntu 8.04 Beta Alternate CD, I put the CD into the DVD slot of my U100 and started installing it the alternative way.
Alternative, in this case, means that you have more influence in the desicions one has to make during the DOS-like installation procedure. After defaulting most of the options like keyboard layout and manually configured the partitions, I end up with…. a GRUPP error. Duh!
But, the ALternate installation has the option to install the Lilo bootloader instead! That should do the trick!
After the bootloader, the installation went well and, for the first time in my life, I had a succesful installation of a linux ditribution on a Libretto.
Booting the laptop for the first time from harddisk resulted in another pleasant surprise. The XFCE desktop showed in the right screen resolution and the onboard wireless was also detected. Never saw that before on a linux laptop.
The next few days I’ll see if all of the nice Libretto’s features (bluetooth, fingerprint reader) also work out-of-the-box and post them on Librettoworld.com.
Excellent work. Have you any further experience with the Linux on the U100? How is power management? Does speed stepping work? Thanks! I’m looking for a small laptop to take to class that I run linux on and have decent battery life.. and the U100 seems good so far!
Works great. XFCE is pretty fast. I did not pay any attention to power management yet, but I do notice the Libretto is very quiet. When I had Vista installed, the fan made a lot more noise. Also, hibernation mode, etc works great. I think the U100 will suit your needs perfectly.
Where did you acquire your U100? I can’t find any but the ones on ebay which are just ridiculously priced. Do you have any suggestions?
