Linux on the U100 (1)

Posted by Bob on Apr 14, 2008

Last weekend I decided to remove my Windows Vista Home Premium installation and try to install linux on my Libretto U100. Reason for this drastic move is the poor performance of Vista, despite the 1 GB memory. Maybe in the future I’ll try Vista again and tune it a biot, but now I want Linux!

So Linux it will be, but what distro will meet my demands? All those different distributions of Linux does not make life a lot easier. But from my little linux experience in the past I choose Xubuntu 7.10 on my Libretto.
Why? Because XFCE is very light compared to Gnome or KDE, and Ubuntu is easy to install and has good support on multimedia, wireless networking and more.

Like this post title suggests, there would be a (2). There will be a part 2, because after a succeful boot from the Live-CD and a succesful default installation on the harddisk (detected als SCSI device), I rebooted and got….nothing! Well, I got an GRUBB error about something. Not quite sure abymore about what, because it got very late at night and I was not amused by that message!

In the meantime I’ve downloaded some other Live-CD’s (Gentoo, Linux From Scratch and Xubuntu 8.04 Beta Alternate installation). The next few days, I’ll keep you informed about the installation of the linux distributions on my LIbretto U100.

Hi Bob,
Same problem I had. I know why, but not how to fix it. As usual with a Libretto (even the U100 apparently), the Bios lies about the real HDD size because of a hidden area. Grub doesn’t like this and Hangs with your Grub Error. Answer is Lilo, but I’ve yet to find any information on how to install Lilo. There was one Sitewhich gave code to solve the problem, but not how or where to install it. Can’t find the Site now. I’m a Linux Newbie as well. I have Xubuntu running on another more conventional Laptop. It’s good, but far from perfect. I find Regular Ubuntu better. Gnome is much more refined if you have the Hardware to handle it.

Ian, thank you for your reaction. I’m very pleased that people actually visit my new site and put comments on it!

I think I’ve visited almost the same pages you did while I was looking for the Grupp error. But, as soon as they start talking about compiling and editing several files, I give up :-).

If you like Ubuntu better, you can also use the Ubuntu Alternate Installation CD on http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. I suppose you also have the choice the install Lilo instead of GRUPP.
